[Headlines] Final NAIA Baseball Poll Released

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In the final regular season poll, Lubbock Christian (Texas) University holds as the No. 1 team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Baseball Coaches' Top 25, announced today (May 7). For the third time this year, the Chaparrals tabbed all first-place votes with 20 nods this poll. LCU stands with the best winning percentage (.962) in all of NAIA baseball at 50-2 and is the No. 1 seed in this week's Region VI Tournament.

The five straight weeks for LCU at No. 1 is the longest such streak for a team other than Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) since Oklahoma City went seven straight weeks during the 2004 season.

The Executive Committee for the 2008 NAIA National Football Championship Game announced today that Dawn Tolbert will chair its Public Relations and Marketing Subcommittee and serve as a member of the Executive Committee.

Tolbert is director of institutional relations at Shorter College, where she manages the college's public relations and marketing efforts, oversees Web communications and serves as a member of the President's Cabinet.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. � The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today that the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) has been awarded host conference status for the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship.

Having declared participation in NAIA Division I men's and women's basketball in early May, the HAAC receives two automatic berths given to any conference with ten or more member institutions. Host conference status awards the HAAC one additional host berth into the oldest national collegiate tournament in any sport dating back to 1937. The NAIA and HAAC officials will meet to finalize the length of the host berth agreement and determine the HAAC's role in the local organizing committee based on this arrangement in the near future.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - California Baptist remained No. 1 in the final National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) softball ratings. The Lancers earned all 13 first place votes and compiled 325 total points to stay in the top spot for the sixth straight week.

Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) stayed at No. 2 with 311 total points for the sixth straight week and Oklahoma City remained at No. 3 with 298 total points for the third consecutive rating. No. 4 Mobile (Ala.) and No. 5 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) stayed in the same spots with 285 and 272 total points respectively for the second straight week.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University baseball put itself in rare territory when it posted its 10th consecutive 50-win season when the Stars downed Texas Wesleyan (May 6) 13-6 and advanced in the NAIA Region VI baseball championships at Jim Wade Stadium.

Fourth-ranked OCU moved to 50-10 on the year. The Stars play 6 p.m. Thursday (May 8) against Oklahoma Baptist.

[MBB DII] Malone College's Hal Smith Steps Down As Athletic Director; Continues As Men's Basketball Coach

Malone College athletic director and head men's basketball coach Hal Smith will step down as the College's AD but continue on as basketball coach, the College's administration announced today.

Smith, who has served as the College's athletic director for the past 21 years (since 1987), will officially step down as the AD on June 30. He will continue to be the Pioneer's head men's basketball coach, a position he has held for the past 25 years, having arrived at Malone in the summer of 1983.

Under Smith's leadership as athletic director, the number of intercollegiate sports that the College has offered has increased from 14 to 18, as Malone has added softball (1992), football (1993), women's soccer (1997) and women's golf (2000) under his tenure. In the 1989-90 year, Malone athletics earned its highest overall ranking in the NAIA All-Sports Standings with a national runner-up finish.
