Camp Joins William Woods Coaching Staff

Share

FULTON, Mo. – Continuing to grow his staff in preparation for the fall 2024 debut of football, William Woods University head coach Julian Mendez announced the addition of Sam Camp to the staff as an assistant coach.

“Having the ability to bring Coach Camp to our staff was a no brainer!” said Mendez. “Coach Camp’s values, ties to the Midwest, and his knowledge on the offensive side of the ball are all things that will continue to make us better. He has experience at the NAIA, Division 2 and Division 1 level that will help us in our recruiting efforts to start this program and compete in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.”

Camp joins William Woods after two stints with Western New Mexico State University, most recently serving as Offensive Coordinator under head coach Billy Hickman. Under his direction, the Mustangs averaged 258.4 yards of passing per game, leading the Lone Star Conference. He also served under previous head coach Philip Vigil as the wide receivers and tight ends coach, pass game coordinator, recruiting coordinator and video coordinator, helping in the development of 2021 Lone Star Conference leaders Josh Powell (61 receptions) and Devin Larsen (266.1 yds/gm, 244 completions).

“To say that I’m excited to join the staff at William Woods is an understatement,” said Camp. “To be back coaching football in the midwest is exciting and to be doing it in a place that has shown such great support for the program is special. From my experience with director of athletics Steve Wilson, I know he has the blueprint to create an awesome program. Along with Coach Mendez’s vision and passion, I know things are being built the right way and I’m extremely proud to be part of such a special opportunity.”

Between his tenures with Western New Mexico State, Camp served as defensive quality control coach for Army Football. Working alongside defensive coordinator Nate Woody, Camp worked to develop defensive game plans based on the projected offensive schemes of opponents. The Golden Knights finished the 2022 season ranked 44th in Total Defense among 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, and 33rd in scoring defense, allowing just 22.5 pts/gm.

During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Camp was the wide receivers and tight ends coach at Kansas Wesleyan, also serving as the video coordinator for the program. Kansas Wesleyan ranked no. 3 in total offense in the NAIA in 2018, improving to no. 2 overall in 2019. The Coyotes qualified for the NAIA Football Championship Series in both seasons of Camp’s tenure.

The Winfield, Kan., native earned a bachelor’s degree in health management from Friends University in 2018, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Falcons, twice earning all-KCAC accolades as a wide receiver. He finished his career with 1,242 receiving yards and 100 career receptions for Friends, recording six touchdowns.
